Reliable Replicated File Systems with GlusterFS

The LISA conference has long served as the annual vendor-neutral meeting place for the wider system administration community. The LISA14 program recognized the overlap and differences between traditional and modern IT operations and engineering, and developed a highly-curated program around 5 key topics: Systems Engineering, Security, Culture, DevOps, and Monitoring/Metrics. The program included 22 half- and full-day training sessions; 10 workshops; and a conference program consisting of 50 invited talks, panels, refereed paper presentations, and mini-tutorials.

John Sellens has been involved in system and network administration for over 25 years, and has been teaching and writing on related topics for many years. He holds an M.Math. in computer science from the University of Waterloo. He is the proprietor of SYONEX, a systems and networks consultancy, and is currently a member of the operations team at FreshBooks.

GlusterFS is a scalable, reliable network distributed file system that can be used in a wide variety of environments, large and small. It provides standard POSIX style file system semantics, through glusterfs mounts or exported via NFS, Samba or object-based services. GlusterFS can be used effectively in small environments to implement reliable and redundant storage, or in larger environments to provide large, scalable data stores.

System administrators who need to implement reliable file storage on commodity hardware, using standard protocols.
