In addition to being a media sponsor for Texas Linux Fest 2013, USENIX had a booth on the expo floor earlier this month. I've wanted to attend TXLF since it started, but the schedule never worked out for me before. I was not disappointed.
In this interview, Professor Christian Müller-Schloer offers a preview of ESOS '13. ESOS '13 will take place in conjunction with the 10th International Conference on Autonomic Computing (ICAC ’13) during USENIX Federated Conferences Week.
Rikki: The Workshop on Embedded Self-Organizing Systems is new at FCW '13. What was your vision as you planned for the 2013 event?
I first met Phil Banks a few years ago when I attended the Southern California Linux Expo (SCaLE). When I saw that his daughter would be speaking at Federated Conferences Week next month in San Jose, I knew I had to interview both of them. In Part 1, Phil talks about how his family is involved in open source. He also discusses the extra effort he makes to help his daughter, Keila, be involved in technology and connect with other women in IT.
Registration is now open and the schedule is posted for our 2013 USENIX Women in Advanced Computing Summit, which will be held during Federated Conferences Week in June. Our first summit was a huge success, so we've turned our June 2013 event into a two-day summit.

Survey: Have you filled out the 2013 USENIX Community Survey yet? If not, you're in luck because we extended the deadline. You have until May 22 (noon PT) to participate in the survey and raffle for a 16GB Nexus 7.
Today I hosted a G+ hangout for the
first time, which I also recorded and added to the USENIX YouTube
channel**. In the hangout, I talked with Amber Graner, Carolyn
Rowland, Chris St. Pierre, Margo Seltzer, and Selena Deckelmann. We
talked about how to encourage women (and first-time speakers in
general) to submit talk proposals for tech events. This is the first
in what we hope will be a series of discussions on increasing the
number of women and first-time speakers at tech events.
Although USENIX has been around since
1975, the organization has evolved over the years to stay
relevant. And to make sure we're providing the most useful content and
services to meet the needs of our communities, we periodically offer
a community survey.
